On Aug. 5, 2010, one of the worst mining incidents in history occurred in a San Jose copper-gold mine in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The Copiapo mining accident, known as the “Chilean mining accident” left 33 miners trapped 2,300 feet underground. Matthew Swift and Will McQuhae made this infographic called “From Collapse to First Glimpse of Freedom.” The highly-detailed infographic illustrates all of the pertinent facts regarding the mine collapse and rescue. With several illustrations, it explains how the mine collapsed and how the men managed to survive while trapped. It also explains how they were rescued, including the type of equipment used.
