The Titanic was a maritime marvel, a one-of-a-kind passenger ship designed to withstand the harshest conditions. Thought to be unsinkable, it could even bear the impact of a direct collision with another ship, as long as no more than four, or maybe even five of its front inner compartments were breached. But it was no match for the iceberg that caused six compartments to breach, resulting in a sunken ship and the deaths of thousands of passengers and crew members. National Geographic made this infographic called “Death of the Titanic.” It illustrates a new theory, formulated by filmmaker James Cameron and other Titanic experts, about how the ship sank and broke apart. The graphic features a timeline with corresponding pictures of the ship’s state at each point, from the moment the iceberg was sighted until the ship sank to the ocean floor.
