Cats have offered humans companionship and comfort, as well as a form of rodent control, for thousands of years. A popular pet in nearly every corner of the globe, there are about as many varieties of domesticated cats as there are superstitions and myths surrounding them. This infographic, created by Pet Care Rx illustrates where different cat breeds originated. It explains that all modern cats are descended from the Felis Sylvestris, or Middle Eastern wildcat. It was in this region that people began domesticating cats about 12,000 years ago, according to the graphic. The infographic also provides a feline family tree, and describes some of the distinguishing characteristic of different cat breeds, from Sphynx to Russian Blues, Siamese to Maine Coons.
