W.E.B. Dubois created hand-drawn infographics to depict what African American life was like in the late 19th and early 20th century. The set of 12 infographics, published in 1900, illustrates subjects including: the average income and expenditures of African American families in Atlanta, Georgia; the number of African Americans living in cities vs. rural areas; the assessed value of household furniture of families in Georgia; the number of properties owned by African Americans in Savannah, GA, and Atlanta; the assessed valuation of all taxable property owned by African Americans in Georgia; the proportion of African American population compared to the overall U.S. population; and the proportion of free people and slaves among African Americans.
