Linguists devised the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to allow people to more effectively learn languages. It is a system of phonetic notation which accurately and uniquely represents each phone or phoneme used in spoken language. It is widely used in foreign language learning classrooms around the world. Language Base Camp made this infographic called “International Phonetic Alphabet in English by Tyler Neyens.” The infographic features an illustration of a side profile of a face. It illustrates the different phones and phonemes in English and where in the mouth these sounds are created. It also shows examples of these sounds in common English words.
