Meteorite Impacts in the Last Century

Meteor showers are a sight to behold. But most of the time, meteors have little or no real effect on earth. That is, until they strike. When that happens, these flying clusters of space-rock can have significant impact, causing craters of varying sizes, depending on the size of the meteor itself. Of course, there’s also the possibility that a meteor striking earth can take out whatever life is in its path. A Reddit user made this infographic to illustrate all recorded meteorite impacts in the U.S. from 1918 to 2018. Titled “Meteorite Impacts in the Last Century,” it features a map of the U.S. with dots to pinpoint the impact sites. Interestingly, you’ll find certain areas have significantly higher rates than others, which the author hypothesized is due to higher visibility and, subsequently, higher reporting rates.
