Polio was endemic in Nigeria for decades. The painful, disabling, and sometimes fatal disease affected thousands of people, many of whom were children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published this infographic, courtesy of Rotary International. The infographic illustrates the progress that’s been made toward eliminating polio in Nigeria. It displays data from 1988 to the present. Fortunately, thanks to global efforts by Rotary International and other organizations, polio may have been eliminated as of 2017. For Nigeria to be certified polio-free, the country must go two full years without a case of polio.
