As a rule of thumb, most adult humans need between six and eight hours of sleep to function their best during the day. Getting adequate sleep is crucial for psychological and physical health, and prolonged sleep deprivation can have serious health consequences. However, not everyone needs as much sleep as the next person. And not all animals do either. This infographic, created by Sleep Zoo, illustrates the fact that humans sleep far less than other primates. The graphic features a graph where the y axis is different species of primates and the x axis is the number of hours of sleep each animal gets on average per night/day. The x axis is also divided and color-coded to show the difference between REM and NREM sleep.
